MY JOURNEY INTO THERAPY WORK
As a child I lacked self-confidence and struggled to express myself, particularly verbally. It was through dance and movement that I found my ‘voice’ and was able to understand the world around me with greater clarity. The sense of freedom I felt was so profound that I felt a calling to be able to provide other people with the hope and opportunity to find the healing they longed for too. I began my career as a drama and language teacher incorporating drama, speech and dance in a way to help students gain confidence and offer opportunity for spontaneous expression. There is something very profound about working with the body as a tool of expression, especially when words are hard to find. I was awestruck by the therapeutic value I saw in this way of working and wanted to support this further and take on professional training to inform my intuitive approach. In completing my MA and becoming qualified as a dance and movement psychotherapist I was privileged to work with a number of clients ranging from adults with mental health and learning difficulties, children on the autistic spectrum, children with emotional and behavioural difficulties and those impacted by HIV and AIDs. I have more recently been involved in training masters' students on their journey to becoming dance and movement psychotherapists. Another passion of mine is to offer practical and informative workshops and talks to anyone interested in learning about or tapping into a deeper awareness of the body-mind-spirit connection. |
